Help Im Struggling

Ive asked for some help here before but it seems nothing I can do can make this thing reliable. I started with DIY arduino and I think the software is amazing however I constantly found myself having reliability issues: script crashing, losing internet connection, time and date, looping on waiting to cool… I managed each time to regain internet by sudo dhcpd (Im very green with linux so the best I can do is google and follow instructions).

Fed up I paid up and bought a brewpi spark core and started with NOOBS from scratch following the guide but Ive found myself back to where I started. After installing raspian and allowing wifi connection with dhcp (Ive followed every guide line for line and cant get static to work but my belkin router gives the same ip to the pi each time anyway so i assume dhcp is ok) although I can bring up brewpi by typing ip into a browser, I have no luck with raspberrypi.local (raspberrypi.local’s server DNS address could not be found.).

I have now been running photon brewpi for nearly 24 hours and it has handled maintaining temps perfectly. My next test was to run a test profile however when i next came back to check, I could no longer login to the pi, to see what was happening i plugged a hdmi monitor into the raspberrypi and resulted in a black screen. A restart fixed the problem.

I fell that I haven’t yet got this as reliable as most on here and still have a few underlying pi/network problems. The linux side is definitely very foreign to me so any help in as close to layman terms as possible would be extremely appreciated.

If I remember correctly, if the Pi has no HDMI connected at boot, it does not work when plugged in later.
Next time the pi loses its Internet connection, try just unplugging the WiFi dongle shortly.

I suspect the Pi was still running fine, just had no network connection. The intervals between the failures of the wifi checker are strange, they are not regular.

What kind of power supply do you have for the Pi?

I was suspecting power supply may be my problem as I originally was powering the pi via a micro usb soldered to my DIY arduino shield and as I am now using my power supply to the photon I have had to temp power the pi with a phone charger.
Can you suggest any reason I would not be able to access brewpi via raspberrypi.local. Thanks so much for your help and work, I’m finally feeling like I’m close to having this work reliably.

note the anomaly in my chart during the time I could not log in to my brewpi, Im guessing that by the beer temp never fluctuating over 2 hours the brewi was still controlling the fridge but not logging the compressor cycling in?

Please use a proper 2A power supply for the Pi.
A phone charger is not a good power supply.
This is probably the cause of your issues.

To be able to access the pi via raspberrypi.local, you will have to follow these instructions:

You should also have the bonjour service on your PC.

bonjour was the missing piece of the puzzle, thanks Elco.
